Rustic Kitchen Tables As Home Furniture

Posted on June 6, 2019 in Uncategorized

Rustic kitchen tables are tables formed from various types of wood with rough and aged surfaces with simple designs. They are not highly polished, but are practical and hardwearing, and can take hard knocks without spoiling the finish, since there is no finish as such.

In bygone days when people lived in log cabins, there were no butcherblock kitchen islands, and most of the food preparation was carried out on the table. The rustic table was frequently the chopping board, preparation area and eating surface, all combined. It was not expected to be a piece of fine furniture, but a functional part of the kitchen that could be scraped and knocked during normal use.

General rustic d├ęcor is simple and straightforward with few frills, using natural materials and rough finishes. It is, however, very endearing, probably because it plays on our sentiments for the old days of pioneering and the log cabin. It is coarse, unfinished, but comfortable, and certain elements of the old country style are incorporated in some modern day kitchens. The rustic table is one of them, with old wooden Windsor spindle chairs or ladderback chairs.

Rustic tables are generally of rectangular shape, with a thick unpolished top. The chairs can be hand painted with motifs such as flowers or birds, and the rustic theme can be applied to the rest of the kitchen if desired. Stone tiled floors, lots of ceramics and baskets, and the occasional old oil lamp can set off a large rustic table very well. However, many of the newer ‘rustic’ style tables are provided with a polished top that has to be maintained.

The material of construction in the early days of the American settlers was what was growing around at the time. Hickory, maple, pine, spruce – all were used for the traditional rustic table and the same is true today. Pine, however, is the most popular choice, and also tends to be a lot less expensive than hardwood. Walnut is sometime used, and some of the grain effects obtainable from this wood are very attractive. Also very expensive!

Rustic tables, therefore, are available in many types of wood, and the reason that pine is the most popular is likely due to cost and its ease of working. It is easier to form pine into the shapes require than it is to work hardwoods, and it is hard to beat a good lodge pole pine kitchen table with root ball legs and claw feet. You get them with drawers and breadboards, and they can be finished with a hardwearing varnish to prevent undue damage in use

They tend not to be used as the main chopping and food preparation surface as in bygone days, although there is still no reason why they can not be. Most people, however, use custom kitchen furniture and working areas for these tasks. In fact, just about all of them! The likely reason for that is the cost, as new ‘rustic’ tables can be expensive, particularly hardwood tables, and nobody wants to start chopping and cutting on their expensive new table. I don’t blame them! Wood is becoming an expensive material worldwide at the moment, and it can sometime be difficult for many to find a good rustic table at an affordable price.

Nevertheless, many people still prefer to have their tables made to order to their own design. Many outlets provide this service, although it can be quite expensive. In fact, you really have three options. You can have a rustic table made to your specifications, you can purchase a new table either online or from one of the many stores that retail them, or you can buy an old rustic table either from antiques shops or online. You can use online furniture stores to make your selection of genuine country style rustic tables to view when you visit the showrooms.

You will also get chairs to go with them, but there is no shortage of reasonable priced chairs that go well with wooden tables. There are plenty of spindle and ladderback chairs available both online and offline. You could also use one of the more modern styles of kitchen table chair to provide a contrast between the old and the new.

Whatever choice you decide to make, rustic kitchen tables look good in a rustic setting, but even if your kitchen is not of a rustic design they are functional, traditional and hardwearing. You will never regret your decision in purchasing what will likely become a family heirloom.

Well Designed Contemporary Furniture

By reading the many publications devoted to interior decoration, the prospective consumer has become well informed about the styles he can expect to find in the stores. His taste has become increasingly surer, and he is now freer to pick and choose among the many contemporary furniture styles developed and made available to him during the past decade.

The high-style inspiration in designing furnishings still stems from the individual designer. Designers are now involved in the planning stages of the choice of material, color, texture, and added decors for any furnishing.

There were no striking new design developments or innovations in 1963-the Mediterranean look still predominated. It influenced the total interior effect, as well as details in furnishings. This style, which began rather timidly a few years ago, became dominant in bedroom furnishings. The Spanish revival in 1963 was, interestingly enough, more a restoration of the Spanish-Moorish furniture popular in the 1920’s than a reintroduction of sixteenth-century antiques. It is a style that combines well with simple contemporary furniture and accessories.

In addition to the prevailing Mediterranean look, there was a trend toward mixing contemporary furnishings with furniture and details, not necessarily antiques, from the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Stores stocking secondhand gold letters (from demolished buildings) and wire carpet beaters became unexpectedly popular, and prices soared on rare items that were once common. The general effect of this blending of old styles with new is one of great sophistication, even on low-budget levels, and is considerably more congenial and attainable than the gilded elegance that characterized previous returns to the past for design inspiration.

No longer are imported accessories available only through decorators and expensive boutiques. Recently specialty shops have opened in far-flung rural and suburban areas. In addition, dime stores offered well-designed ceramic bowls from Japan, crewel embroideries from Pakistan, metalwork from India and Israel, and pottery from Portugal. Mail-order business in imported decorative accessories also rose in volume. One of the easiest ways to purchase any contemporary furniture is through online internet. It is the newest technology that brought much ease and simplicity in purchasing at your own convenience.

An outgrowth of the White House renovation was the increased interest in good American furniture not ordinarily identified before with the American tradition. The lesser-known styles contemporary with English Regency, French Directoire and Empire, and German Biedermeier were being used more often, and the ornate Victorian was also rediscovered and re-evaluated. Reintroduced into American homes were roll-top desks, Murphy beds, chifforobes, and wicker furniture. Keeping this in mind, designers turned the roll-top desk into an elegant piece of furniture.

Contemporary furniture became the latest trend as far as furnishing is concerned. There are an increasing number of people who chose this kind of style over the other existing ones.

Accessible Design Home Modifications For Seniors and People With Disabilities

Posted on June 2, 2019 in Uncategorized

One out of every two people in the United States has some type of disability that limits their daily living. The disability could be from a stroke, a fall, or another age-related difficulty. With approximately 70 million people in this age category, it presents a large segment of the population.

For most seniors, staying at home as they age (aging-in-place) is a big priority. More than 90 percent of persons surveyed age 65 and older would prefer to stay in their current residence as long as possible.

Accessible Home Modifications allow people to stay at home longer instead of moving to a care facility. People that stay in their own home have increased self-esteem, see friends and family members more often, and are generally happier. A caregiver may be needed but this is a thriving industry and help is just a phone call away.

What Can Be Done to Make a Home Accessible and Barrier-Free?

Make the Bathroom Safer

Most accidents in the home happen in the bathroom. Making sure the bathroom is safe and accessible is probably the first place to examine.

Grab Bars should be placed inside the shower and directly outside the shower entrance. They can also be placed next to the toilet.

Raise your toilet with a Toilevator toilet spacer. This device goes underneath the base of the toilet and raises it up 3.5 inches. This is safer and cleaner than using a toilet elevator on top of the seat.

Add Non-Slip Shower Strips to the floor of the shower or bathtub. These are inexpensive and easy to install and prevent slipping while standing in the shower.

Living Room and Bedroom

A lot of time is spent in the living room and bedroom standing and sitting. Make sure carpets and rugs are flat to avoid tripping over them.

Provide ample lighting, especially near stairways, to avoid tripping or walking into things.

Devices such as Couch Canes, Super Poles, and Bed Canes make it easier and more stable for standing and sitting. They also take the pressure off the knees.

Furniture Risers (sofa risers) can be placed under the legs of sofas, chairs, or beds to lift them up a few inches making it easier to stand or sit.

The Kitchen

Accidents in the kitchen many times stem from reaching up high in cabinets.

Use a Step Stool With a Handle for stability and to make it easier to reach items.

A Portable Reacher can grasp items high up in a cabinet.

Outside the Home

Make sure walkways are free of cracks and stairs are lighted for night. Mark them with colored tape or paint so it is easier to see the steps or changes in elevation.

Handrails along walkways or near steps and doorways give something to hold onto in problem areas.

There are numerous solutions for making a home safer and more accessible. Many of them can be done simply by looking around and making minor adjustments. Others are bigger jobs that require a contractor, such as adding a stairlift.

Check for contractors that are CAPS (Certified Aging in Place Specialists) certified to ensure they are qualified to do the work.
